New Nintendo Switch 2 Model With Replaceable Battery Set for Europe

Nintendo has confirmed a new version of the Nintendo Switch 2, designed to meet updated European rules on replaceable batteries. The revised model is planned for release in Autumn 2026 across Europe and the United Kingdom, with a gradual rollout expected.

The new Switch 2 model will include a battery that can be replaced more easily, a change required by new European legislation covering electronic devices. This should help extend the console’s long-term lifespan, especially for players who keep their systems for many years or worry about battery wear over time.

There are a few small trade-offs. The replaceable battery reportedly holds around 1% less charge than the current Switch 2 battery, and the updated console weighs about 10g more. For most users, those differences should be minor compared with the benefit of easier battery replacement.

Nintendo is also preparing updated versions of its official controllers. New Joy-Con models are expected in Winter 2026, with each controller weighing about 2g more. A revised Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is also planned, reportedly becoming 7g lighter and around 16% smaller.

More controller updates are expected in early 2027. Nintendo plans to release a new Nintendo 64 controller, slightly heavier than the existing version, as well as an updated GameCube controller with a battery around 5% larger.

For now, the new Switch 2 hardware appears to be limited to Europe and the UK because of regional battery regulations. While the changes are not a major redesign, they should make the system more repair-friendly and could become an important step for Nintendo’s hardware strategy in regulated markets.
