{Undefined} attracted me with a promise that always works on me: land on a large world, gather resources, design almost anything, and eventually leave the planet in a machine built with my own hands. I imagined a clean progression from a small survival camp to an orbital station. My actual experience was far less elegant. I spent the opening hours learning how materials behaved, misunderstanding several construction systems, and producing objects that technically worked but looked as though they had been assembled during an emergency.

That awkward beginning was also the reason I kept playing. The game did not make me feel like I was placing prefabricated pieces into predetermined slots. It encouraged me to think about shape, function, weight, resources, and the physical relationship between different components. When something failed, I could usually identify a decision that caused the problem. Sometimes the mistake was mechanical. Sometimes it was structural. Quite often, it was simply my confidence arriving several hours before my competence.

{Undefined} is clearly more interested in possibility than convenience. It gives me broad tools and expects experimentation to fill the gaps. That freedom can be fascinating, but it also makes the rough edges of the Early Access experience impossible to ignore.

Day One: A Planet, a Tool, and No Sensible Priorities

I began on a massive voxel world with the familiar survival-game instinct to collect anything that looked useful. Stone, ore, and other materials quickly became part of my routine. I searched the terrain, inspected the landscape, and tried to understand which resources were essential for the first meaningful construction projects.

The scale of the environment immediately changed how I thought about exploration. This was not a compact map where every important location was placed within a short walk. The planet felt genuinely large, and that size gave even basic movement a sense of commitment. Leaving my starting area without preparation could mean spending considerable time finding the correct route back.

My first base location was selected with the strategic precision of someone who had looked around for approximately thirty seconds. It had a decent view and enough flat ground for construction, which seemed sufficient at the time. Later, I realized that resource access, transportation routes, and future expansion mattered far more than the scenery.

I enjoyed that the terrain was not merely decorative. Digging into the planet and extracting materials made the landscape part of the progression system. I could alter the world, create underground spaces, or leave visible evidence of every mining decision. The planet gradually became a record of my activity rather than an untouched background.

The Object Designer Changed How I Approached Building

The defining feature for me was the ability to create custom-shaped components. Most building games give me a large catalogue of walls, floors, windows, machines, and decorative pieces. {Undefined} takes a more flexible approach by allowing me to shape the blocks that become those objects.

At first, I underestimated how important this would be. I expected the designer to function mainly as a cosmetic tool. Instead, it became central to how I solved problems. I could create a wall that matched an unusual corner, build furniture suited to a specific room, or design a structural piece for a vehicle rather than searching for a close approximation in a menu.

This freedom changed my relationship with imperfections. In another construction game, an awkward gap might be caused by limited building pieces. Here, the gap usually existed because I had designed something poorly. The game gave me enough control that I could not blame the catalogue.

My First Useful Custom Objects

This felt natural for the kind of progression the game encourages. Every new project generated more materials, tools, unfinished parts, and experimental designs. I needed organized storage and enough floor space to assemble larger objects. Decoration repeatedly lost the competition for resources.

I divided the workshop into rough functional zones. One area held raw materials, another contained crafted parts, and a larger open section became the place where I assembled vehicles. The arrangement was not beautiful, but it reduced the time I spent searching through containers.

The satisfaction came from watching the space evolve around my behavior. I did not build a workshop because a quest instructed me to do so. I built it because repeated mistakes had shown me exactly what the previous layout lacked.

Mining Felt Peaceful Until I Needed One Specific Resource

Resource gathering was relaxing when I had no urgent objective. I could explore the terrain, dig into promising areas, and return with a mixture of materials. The rhythm of leaving the base, gathering supplies, and using them in construction projects worked well during casual sessions.

The mood changed whenever progress depended on one particular ore. General exploration became a focused search, and the planet’s scale became less charming. I could spend a long time collecting materials I already possessed while the one resource I needed remained absent.

This is a common survival-game problem, but it felt more significant here because advanced construction depends on multiple connected systems. A missing material could delay a machine, which delayed a vehicle part, which prevented a larger project from becoming operational.

I gradually learned to gather more than I immediately needed. Returning from an expedition with only the exact amount required for one recipe usually guaranteed that I would need the same resource again several minutes later.

I Built a Vehicle Before I Had a Good Road

Once I had access to enough components, I turned my attention to transportation. The size of the planet made a vehicle feel essential rather than optional. Walking was useful for inspecting nearby terrain, but larger resource trips needed something faster.

Designing my first vehicle was one of the most enjoyable parts of the game. I chose the dimensions, shaped the body, positioned functional elements, and tried to balance practicality with appearance. It looked acceptable while sitting in the workshop.

The problems appeared when it started moving. The weight distribution was not as sensible as I had assumed, the terrain was less forgiving than the workshop floor, and several design choices became inconvenient once I needed to control the vehicle outside a perfectly flat area.

I revised it repeatedly. The body became wider, unnecessary decorative weight disappeared, and important parts were repositioned. Each version taught me something about how the game’s physics responded to my construction.

The final vehicle was still not elegant, but it was mine. I knew why each strange-looking section existed because every part had been added to solve a specific problem.

Physics Turned Design Into More Than Decoration

I appreciated that building was not completely separated from physical behavior. A vehicle or aircraft could not succeed only because it looked convincing. Mass, gravity, placement, and movement mattered.

This made experimentation meaningful. When a design leaned too heavily to one side, I had to reconsider the structure. When a machine struggled to move, adding more power was not always the smartest solution. Sometimes removing weight or changing the geometry produced a better result.

The realistic ambitions of the physics system gave successful designs a stronger sense of achievement. A working vehicle felt earned because I had dealt with more than a visual assembly puzzle.

However, the same system occasionally behaved unpredictably. Early Access physics can produce strange reactions, especially when custom objects and complex assemblies interact. I experienced moments where a carefully positioned component moved in a way I did not expect or where a minor collision created a larger problem.

Some of those incidents were funny. Others required rebuilding work that I did not feel responsible for losing.

Flying Was the Moment My Ambition Became Dangerous

Ground vehicles gave me confidence, so I naturally decided that I was ready to build an aircraft. This was incorrect.

A flying machine introduced a new collection of design questions. Weight had to be considered more carefully, functional parts needed effective placement, and the structure had to remain controllable rather than simply becoming airborne.

My first attempt technically left the ground. I consider that a partial success. It also rotated with alarming enthusiasm and returned to the surface much sooner than planned.

I spent more time adjusting the aircraft than flying it. Small changes created noticeable differences, which made testing addictive. I shifted components, modified the body, removed unnecessary pieces, and repeatedly launched from the same area.

The learning process felt similar to working with a complicated vehicle editor in a simulation game. The difference was that I had gathered the materials and built the surrounding infrastructure myself. The aircraft was not an isolated menu creation. It existed within the larger survival world.

From Shelter to Space Program

The possibility of reaching space gave my progression a long-term direction. Basic survival was only the opening stage. The real fantasy was to transform a rough planetary base into a facility capable of supporting spacecraft construction.

I liked how dramatically that changed the visual identity of my settlement. Early structures were practical boxes designed to protect resources. Later areas needed more room, stronger organization, and specialized components. The base slowly began to resemble an industrial site.

Building a spacecraft was intimidating because every weakness felt more serious. A poor ground vehicle could stop beside the base. A flawed spacecraft represented a much larger investment of time and materials.

I tested individual systems before trusting the entire structure. Even then, I remained uncertain during the first serious launch. Watching a custom-built machine rise from the planet created the kind of satisfaction that survival sandboxes are designed to produce. The journey began with basic gathering and eventually led to a vehicle capable of leaving the world where it had been constructed.

That transition was the strongest example of the game’s potential. It connected mining, crafting, design, physics, infrastructure, and exploration into one personal objective.

The Interface Often Made Me Work Harder Than Necessary

The creative systems are ambitious, but the interface did not always explain them clearly. I frequently understood what I wanted to build before I understood which sequence of menus and actions would produce it.

Some interactions lacked the immediate visual feedback I expected. Identifying selectable objects, understanding inventory behavior, or finding the correct construction option could require experimentation that felt unrelated to the actual design challenge.

I do not mind learning a complex system. In fact, complexity was one of the reasons I became interested in {Undefined}. The frustration came from moments where the difficulty was caused by presentation rather than mechanics.

A stronger in-game tutorial would improve the opening hours considerably. Video guides can help, but I prefer contextual explanations that appear while I am using the relevant feature. A short interactive sequence for mining, crafting, object design, vehicle construction, and power systems would make the game more approachable without reducing its depth.

I Learned to Keep a Construction Journal

After forgetting several useful measurements and component arrangements, I began keeping simple notes outside the game. I recorded approximate dimensions, required materials, and changes made between vehicle versions.

This might sound excessive, but the process made larger projects easier to manage. Custom design creates more variables than a standard block catalogue, and remembering every decision became difficult once several builds were active at the same time.

My notes also revealed how often I repeated the same mistakes. Components were regularly too heavy, interiors were too narrow, and access points were added only after the rest of the structure was complete.

The journal gradually became a record of progress. Early entries contained basic questions, while later pages included plans for aircraft and orbital construction. The game had taught me to think more like an engineer, although not necessarily a good one.

Creative Mode and Survival Satisfied Different Parts of Me

Survival mode gave every object a cost. A poorly designed component represented wasted time and materials. That pressure made successful builds meaningful, but it also discouraged wild experimentation.

Creative-focused play allowed me to test ideas more freely. I could explore dimensions, shapes, and vehicle configurations without turning every failed attempt into another mining expedition. This became useful when I wanted to understand a system before committing to it in survival.

I enjoyed moving between the two mindsets. Creative experimentation helped me learn, while survival gave those lessons a practical purpose. A design that worked in an unrestricted environment still needed to be affordable and useful in the main progression.

Players who primarily enjoy architecture and engineering may spend more time designing than surviving. Others may prefer the sense of earning every machine from raw planetary resources. The game’s concept supports both approaches, although its unfinished elements affect each mode differently.

The Empty Scale Was Both Impressive and Lonely

The life-sized planetary ambition gives {Undefined} a unique atmosphere. Standing on a large open landscape made my base feel physically small. Mountains and distant terrain suggested that the world continued far beyond my immediate projects.

That scale could also make the environment feel empty. Long-distance travel sometimes contained little meaningful activity between departure and destination. A realistic world size is impressive, but size alone does not always create interesting exploration.

I wanted more discoveries that rewarded leaving familiar territory: unusual geological formations, abandoned structures, environmental hazards, rare resources, or locations that encouraged specialized vehicles. The planet already provides room for these experiences. It needs more reasons to cross that room.

The quietness occasionally worked in the game’s favor. Building alone on a huge planet created a believable sense of isolation. My machines, roads, mines, and structures became small signs of human activity in an environment that did not appear designed for my convenience.

Early Access Requires Patience

{Undefined} feels like a collection of powerful ideas that are still being connected into a consistently smooth experience. The custom object system, planetary scale, destructible terrain, vehicle construction, realistic physics, and space ambitions create an exciting foundation.

At the same time, I encountered rough interfaces, limited guidance, inconsistent interactions, and systems that did not always feel complete. Some planned possibilities may be more developed than others, and the current experience should not be judged as though every advertised concept has reached its final form.

I had the best time when I treated the game as an experimental sandbox rather than a polished survival campaign. I entered with personal projects, accepted that some systems would resist me, and enjoyed the process of learning through prototypes.

Players who need a structured quest line, constant environmental activity, or an effortless interface may struggle with the current version. The game often expects motivation to come from the player’s own engineering goals.

The Project That Finally Made Everything Click

My most satisfying build was not the largest spacecraft or the fastest vehicle. It was a compact mobile workshop designed for resource expeditions. I wanted enough storage for ore, space for essential equipment, stable movement across uneven terrain, and a body that did not look completely improvised.

The first version was too heavy. The second had poor internal access. The third worked well but wasted space. By the fourth version, every major section had a clear purpose.

I took it farther from the base than any previous ground vehicle. The storage capacity allowed me to remain away longer, and the improved structure survived terrain that would have caused problems for my earlier designs.

That vehicle represented everything I enjoyed about {Undefined}. It began as a practical need, became a design problem, failed several times, and eventually changed how I explored the planet. No quest marker told me to create it, and no predefined blueprint decided its shape.

Why I Continued Building Despite the Rough Edges

I continued returning because the game made my projects feel personal. In many survival sandboxes, two players may build different bases using the same recognizable catalogue of pieces. Here, the object designer allowed even ordinary furniture or structural parts to carry the decisions of the person who created them.

That degree of ownership made the failures easier to tolerate. A broken interface or unpredictable physical reaction could be frustrating, but the underlying construction fantasy remained compelling. I was not simply unlocking better equipment. I was gradually learning how to produce better equipment myself.

{Undefined} is currently easier to admire for its ambition than to recommend as a completely polished experience. Its planetary survival framework can feel sparse, its systems need clearer explanations, and Early Access limitations remain visible throughout normal play.

Still, few games have allowed me to move so naturally from digging into a planet to shaping custom furniture, constructing vehicles, experimenting with aircraft, and planning structures beyond the atmosphere. My first spaceship may have resembled an oversized shed, but it was an oversized shed that I had designed, supplied, assembled, and somehow launched into space. That was enough to make the entire complicated journey feel worthwhile.
